Why you can't sleep, according to the stuff you do before your head hits the pillow
It's rarely the mattress. It's the thirty minutes before bed. A no-nonsense look at the habits wrecking your sleep.
People spend hundreds on mattresses and then scroll TikTok in bed until their brain files a complaint. Guess which one matters more.
The hour before bed decides the night
- **You work until 11pm.** Your brain does not have an off switch. You close the laptop and expect to sleep. That is like sprinting and expecting your heart to stop instantly.
- **You argue online.** Even mild arguments spike cortisol. The alertness sticks around for hours, long after you close the app.
- **You drink coffee past 3pm.** Caffeine's half-life is roughly five hours. Your 4pm latte is still at half strength at 9pm.
- **You treat your bed like a home office.** Your brain learns that this room is for thinking, not sleeping.
The fix is boring
Pick a stopping time for screens and honor it. Do the same low-energy thing every night so your body learns the cue: same order, same light, same temperature. Cold room, dark room, quiet room.
You do not need an app or a gadget. You need to stop performing your worst habits and then acting surprised. Sleep is a habit problem wearing a medical costume. Solve the habit and the problem mostly solves itself.
